Near Death Expereience
NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE
Let's take a fascinating foray into one of the most magical, mysterious phenomena that has served to perplex both scientists, clergy and armchair philosophers alike for the past 25 years - the Near Death Experience.
First let's step back and see if we can simply answer the question in a qualified way: What actually is an NDE? Typically, it refers to the extraordinary phenomena reported during a highly traumatic and charged experience where the percipient is teetering between life and death due to extreme physiological or emotional distress. Heart attack sufferers, drowning victims, solders in warfare, car accidents victims and many other similar sorts of catastrophic occurrences are rife with reports of the victim leaving his or her body, traveling in what they refer to as an astral or etheric body, visit relatives who are already passed over, go through a tunnel, often times have a life review, and meet a deity of some sort who helps them transition through the various stages of the process. Most NDE survivors report the experience was the most profound, hyper-real and life changing experience of their lives, and most report a diminished, if not total loss of fear of death.
Most NDE's are positive and life affirming, few are filled with any hard core religious dogma other than that of love and peace, and even fewer still are scary and "hell" like, although there have certainly been some reported. The near death experience has provided a small window into the wonderful world of the soul and spirit, as well as a fascinating opening into the power of the dying brain, as some scientists have argued that the whole experience is simply the defense mechanism of a brain in the last throes of life, trying to protect it's "owner" from impending death.
Philosophers have long argued that the NDE is the gateway to understanding the soul, religion has pointed to it's part in salvation ( as many come back from the experience dedicated to helping others) and skeptics argue it is simply a hallucination, fabrication or even wishful thinking at it's most desperate. The truth is - no one knows for sure....but the ones that seem to know the best, those who have had the experience themselves, hold no doubt whatsoever: They are certain the experience was real, profound and has forever changed them for the better, and to be honest, that is good enough for me!
